Wi-Fi vs Long-Range RF vs Solar: Which Smart Water Tank Sensor Suits Your Property?

Wi-Fi vs Long-Range RF vs Solar: Which Smart Water Tank Sensor Suits Your Property?

When you are setting up backup municipal storage, rainwater harvesting, or a borehole tank, choosing the right level monitor can feel harder than it needs to be. One of the most common questions we get at SensibleIO is how our smart ultrasonic sensors differ—and which one will work reliably on a specific property.

Here is the short answer: all three of our monitors use the exact same ultrasonic sensing core and work with the same apps. You do not sacrifice accuracy or smart home features by picking one over another. Instead, choosing the right model comes down to two practical checks at your water tank: how far the tank sits from your Wi-Fi router, and whether you have mains power nearby.

What Every SensibleIO Tank Sensor Has in Common

Before looking at how the models connect and get their power, it helps to know what stays identical across the range. Whether you choose our standard Wi-Fi, Solar Wi-Fi, or Long-Range RF unit, you get:

- Height-based ultrasonic measurement: Every sensor mounts to the top of your tank lid and measures vertical water depth from 0.1 m to 4.0 m with an accuracy of ±0.02 m (2 cm). Because ultrasonic sensors measure height rather than volume, this 4.0 m ceiling fits almost all standard South African vertical and slimline tanks up to roughly 15,000 L.
- Full app and Home Assistant support: Every model pairs with the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app on iOS and Android for real-time percentage levels and high/low tank alarms. All three also expose their data Home Assistant through the standard Tuya integration.

Check 1: Does 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Reach Your Tank? (50 m vs 300 m RF)

The biggest difference between a suburban courtyard installation and a smallholding or farm setup is wireless distance—and what stands between your router and your tank.

Our direct Wi-Fi sensors connect straight to your home router over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Why 2.4 GHz instead of 5 GHz? Higher-frequency 5 GHz Wi-Fi is built for speed indoors, but it struggles to punch through South African double-brick walls, plaster, and corrugated iron roofs. The 2.4 GHz band travels much further through solid obstacles, giving our Wi-Fi sensors an indoor and near-home range of up to 50 m depending on your walls and router placement.

Quick phone test: Stand next to your water tank with your smartphone connected to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. If you have a stable signal right at the tank, either of our direct Wi-Fi models will work.

What if your tank sits 100 m away at a borehole, on an elevated tank stand, or behind outbuildings where Wi-Fi drops out completely? That is where the Long Range RF Water Tank Level Monitor (https://sensibleio.co.za/products/long-range-rf-water-tank-level-monitor) comes in. Instead of trying to stretch Wi-Fi across your plot, the tank-mounted sensor transmits over a dedicated sub-GHz radio frequency (RF) link up to 300 m line of sight to a compact, USB-powered indoor gateway display unit. You plug the indoor gateway in inside your house (within 50 m of your router), and it bridges the tank data straight into your Wi-Fi network and phone app—while also giving you a live indoor display.

Check 2: How Will You Power the Sensor at the Tank?

Once you know your wireless range, look at power at the tank itself:

1. Tank within Wi-Fi range + nearby plug point:
If your tank sits next to the house, outside the laundry wall, or right beside a booster pump plug point, the Ultrasonic Water Tank Level Monitor - Wi-Fi Enabled (https://sensibleio.co.za/products/smart-ultrasonic-water-tank-level-monitor-wi-fi-enabled) is the simplest, most cost-effective choice. It runs off its included 100–240 VAC to DC 5V power adapter.

2. Tank within Wi-Fi range + no mains power at the tank:
Nobody wants to hire an electrician, lift paving, or trench 230 V conduit across a garden just to power a low-draw sensor. Our Solar Powered Wi-Fi Water Tank Level Sensor (https://sensibleio.co.za/products/solar-powered-wi-fi-water-tank-level-sensor) uses a 3 W / 6 V solar panel with an integrated 3600 mAh rechargeable battery. Because the ultrasonic sensor draws less than 100 mA during active measurement and Wi-Fi transmission, that 3600 mAh battery easily keeps the unit running day and night, through extended cloudy spells, and through power trips. Both wall and ground mounts are included in the box so you can angle the panel north in clear sun.

3. Tank out of Wi-Fi range (up to 300 m) + power at the tank:
Choose the Long Range RF Water Tank Level Monitor (https://sensibleio.co.za/products/long-range-rf-water-tank-level-monitor). The tank sensor uses its included AC power adapter at the tank (for example, tapping into power at a borehole pump house or outbuilding), while the indoor gateway runs off a standard USB cable inside your home.

A Quick Note on Slimline Tanks and Float Valves

Whichever model you choose, remember that ultrasonic sensors need a clear 15° cone straight down to the water surface. On narrow slimline tanks, a traditional mechanical ball-float arm often swings into that beam cone—or splashes water across the surface during refills—which can cause false high readings. If you are fitting a sensor to a slimline tank or near an inlet, pairing it with our Compact Float Valve (https://sensibleio.co.za/products/compact-float-valve) keeps the valve flush against the side wall and directs refill water straight down through a 20 mm PVC elbow.

Still Not Sure Which Setup Fits Your Tank?

Every property layout is a little different, especially when double-brick walls, trees, or multi-tank manifolds are involved. If you are unsure which sensor suits your tank height, Wi-Fi coverage, or borehole setup, get in touch with us at SensibleIO with your tank dimensions and rough distance to the house—we are always happy to help you spec the right setup the first time.
